Census Data Mapper Map and Analysis - October 2013

I analyzed the percent of Black or African Americans in the United States. 14.8 - 85.7% of them are in the South. Other highly populated clusters are by the big cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Washington, and Philadelphia. Parts of the West and Midwest are not highly populated. They have 4% or less.

Much of the African Americans are in the South. This is where they first came to our country because of slavery. When they became free, this is where they knew there were jobs and a better climate. Many African Americans, just like many other races, are by the big cities where there are more job opportunities. You don’t see them in the West and Midwest because the climate is colder and there aren’t as many jobs.

Many of the Southern states are democratic. This is because much of their population is African American, who tend to be democrats. This affects our voting. Their food has become part of our culture. They call it “soul food”. Just like how their music has. They made the blues, ragtime, gospel music, etc.
