Gapminder Screencast & Analysis

As people living with HIV rises, life expectancy rises.
As children per woman rises, income per person falls

PART 1:
a. I am comparing the number of people living with HIV (number, all people) to life expectancy (years). The human immunodeficiency virus is a lentivirus that causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, a condition in humans in which progressive failure of the immune system allows life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive. Life expectancy is the average period that a person may expect to live in that country. I am also comparing the number of children per woman (total fertility rate) to income per person (GDP/capita). Children per woman is the average number of children a woman in a given country. Per capita income, also known as income per person, is the mean income of the people in an economic unit such as a country or city.

b. HIV affects the population and at what age the population dies out which is directly connected to economic development. If all the middle aged people are dying there is no working force. Also, the elderly have no one to care for them. Life expectancy is in direct correlation to economic development. A longer life expectancy results in a larger population, therefore having more opportunity for economic growth.  Just like HIV and life expectancy, the number of children per woman affects the population. If the population is small economic development is nearly impossible. Although, as child per woman rises, income per person falls therefore hurting our development. You need a balance between money and people.

PART 2:
a. In the global perspective development is higher in areas where there the total fertility rate is lower. The total fertility rate is high while the income per person is low during the early 1800’s for the world and as time goes on the fertility rate decreases and income per person increases. The countries in Africa and South Asia show the highest total  fertility rates with lowest income per person while the countries in the Americas and Europe/Central Asia have lower total fertility rates and higher income per person. Also within Africa the countries development gets higher as the total fertility rate decreases and income per person increases. The outliers in Africa are the very developed ones some of which that have lower total fertility rates and higher income per person than countries in the Americas. And in the Americas the least developed countries have higher total fertility rates and lower income per person. In the global perspective places with higher development have higher life expectancies which is shown in the Americas, Europe/Central Asia and East Asia/Pacific. The places with lower development, African and South Asian countries, have the lowest life expectancies. In the low development countries Cape Verde is an outlier with it’s very high life expectancy and in the high development countries Haiti is an outlier with it’s life expectancy closest to the life expectancies of African countries.

b. Poverty and lack of communication leads to no economic development which causes HIV to be high along with total fertility rate and income to be low. And lots of technology, modernization, medical advances, urbanization and workers in the tertiary sector leads to very high income per person along with a lower total fertility rate and longer life expectancies.
